With Apple preparing to unveil the iPhone 17 series next month, attention is divided between buyers waiting for the new lineup and those weighing attractive offers on the iPhone 16, which is now available at record discounts across Indian platforms.
Industry trackers point out that the iPhone 16 remains a strong option for many users, especially with Apple’s artificial intelligence upgrades expected to arrive only after the iPhone 15 Pro generation. This raises a key question: is purchasing the discounted iPhone 16 worthwhile when the iPhone 17 launch is only weeks away?
Analysts expect the iPhone 17 series to launch at a higher price point compared to last year. The increase is linked to supply chain costs, US trade tariffs under President Donald Trump’s policy framework, and anticipated hardware upgrades. Leaks suggest the new lineup will feature a periscope telephoto lens in the Pro models and a potential redesign that may replace the Plus with an Air variant.
Retailers in India have begun cutting iPhone 16 prices sharply to clear inventory ahead of the new series. Current offers show price reductions of up to Rs 31,000, with additional exchange benefits depending on the model being traded. For buyers upgrading from older iPhones such as the X, 11, or 12, the effective cost can drop to nearly Rs 50,000, including exchange bonuses. Users of the iPhone 14 may secure even greater savings, with as much as Rs 30,000 worth of benefits.
The iPhone 16 features a 6.1-inch Super Retina OLED display and weighs 170 grams. It runs on the A18 processor with 8GB RAM and supports up to 512GB storage. The rear cameras include a 48-megapixel primary sensor and a 12-megapixel secondary lens, while the front camera is rated at 12 megapixels. The phone supports 25W wired charging, and Apple has confirmed that its AI-driven software features will extend to this model in 2026.
For many users, the decision centers on timing. While the iPhone 17 promises new hardware and likely higher costs, the iPhone 16 now offers high value through aggressive discounts. Those using older devices may find the reduced price of the iPhone 16 compelling, while others may prefer to wait for the iPhone 17 series despite the expected premium pricing.
